Car insurance

We sourced quotes for monthly premiums for nine car insurance companies for comprehensive car insurance. Our survey took place in February and March 2025. We sourced quotes for four policies:

• Young person – aged 23 years and wants to insure a 2013 Mazda Axela hatchback for $10,500.

• Middle-aged person – aged 45 years and wants to insure a 2021 MG ZS EV SUV for $27,500.

• Older person – aged 70 years and wants to insure a 2015 Honda Fit (hybrid) for $12,000.

• Family of four – dad (50), mum (50), son (19) and daughter (17) want to insure a 2017 Ford Escape SUV (AWD) for $19,000.

The car insurance quotes in the ‘Compare’ tab are based on these assumptions.

• Quotes are for monthly premiums.

• Our drivers are all fully licenced, except for the son and daughter in our family of four (who hold restricted licences).

• None of our drivers have been convicted of a driving offence.

• None of our drivers have made a claim in the past 5 years.

• The cars are fitted with alarms and are usually parked in residential driveways.

• The cars are not modified or used for business purposes.

• Apart from our young person and the teenagers in our family of four, no-one aged under 25 will drive the cars.

• The excess is the standard excess for each age group.

Things to note about the car insurance companies

• Cove Insurance doesn't have a standard excess. Customers can select an excess from $400 to $1,000. An additional excess applies to inexperienced drivers. Cove does not offer coverage to drivers aged under 21.

• AMP, State and AMI premiums were gathered from the insurers’ websites and have different policy start dates. 

• MAS indicated it would insure for market value, rather than an agreed value. Its monthly premiums include a 6% fee. Yearly premiums will not incur the fee.

• FMG also indicated it would insure for market value. Monthly premiums include a 7.5% fee. Yearly premiums will not incur the fee.
